Locations, Hours and Services (walk-in)

    The following tests must have an appointment booked:

    • Urea Breath Test (UBT)
    • Tolerance Tests (Glucose Tolerance, Lactose Tolerance, Xylose Tolerance)
    • Immigration and Refugee
    • Drug Screens
    • Glucagon
    • Paternity

What is Alberta Precision Laboratories?

Calgary Lab Services began transitioning to a province wide lab service in April 2018, which is now called Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL)

  • Yes. You can continue to book appointments as you have in the past. Online booking and phone numbers have not changed.

  • Yes, current requisitions will continue to be accepted.

  • No. Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) will provide lab services in the same facilities.

  • No. You can continue to have your standing order collected at any of our Patient Service Centre locations.

Account Setup and Changes

  • No. You can book an appointment as a Guest with the same functions as a registered user.

    • Call the Patient Appointment Line at (403) 770-5136 and one of the agents will give you a temporary password to log in
    • Email palfeedback@cls.ab.ca from the email address you registered with, and include your name, phone number and username. A temporary password will be sent to you via email within 3 business days
    • Note that if you booked as a Guest you will not have a username or password
  • You will need to create a new account or use the Guest feature. The Guest feature allows you to book without a username or password.

    • Accounts that are inactive for 13 months are automatically deleted. If you come to the lab once a year or less, APL recommends using the Guest fuction to book appointments.
    • You may require a password reset, see "Forgotten Username/Password" above
  • Only registered account users can change their contact information:

    • Sign in by clicking the sign in button in the blue menu bar above. Once signed in, click on your name displayed on the blue menu bar. You can then change your contact information and click Save.
  • Usernames cannot be changed, however, you can register a new account using the same name, phone number and email address.

Booking Appointments

    • All the appointments for the date you have chosen are booked and no more are available
    • The Patient Service Centre location is not open on the date selected. If you do not see any appointments or a time that you desire, click the Next 7 Days button (top right side below the blue menu bar) and more dates will be displayed.
    • The online booking system only allows you to book up to 2 months in advance.
  • You can book up to 2 months in advance.

  • Appointments are highly recommended at all locations (Chestermere is Appointment Only). You must have an appointment for:

    • Urea Breath Test (UBT)
    • Tolerance Tests (Glucose Tolerance, Lactose Tolerance, Xylose Tolerance)
    • Immigration and Refugee
    • Drug Screens
    • Glucagon
    • Paternity
  • Yes. For some testing we need additional information from you. We also need to be sure we provide accurate preparation instructions for some tests. You need to phone us (403) 770-5136 to book:

    • Urea Breath Test (UBT)
    • Tolerance Tests* (Glucose Tolerance, Lactose Tolerance, Xylose Tolerance)
    • Drug Screens
    • Glucagon
    • Paternity

    *Glucose Fasting is not included in this list.

  • The Patient Appointment Line is open Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm, closed weekends and statutory holidays. Our staff will ask for your name, phone number and an email address. They will also ask which tests your Healthcare Provider has ordered for you.

  • Yes. The Guest feature allows you to book appointments for your family member/friend without having to create a username or password for each individual.

  • You have 2 options:

    • Cancel the appointment and re-book with the correct name as a Guest or on the correct account
    • When you reach the front desk, inform the Patient Service Centre staff that the appointment was booked under a different name.

    Your laboratory results are not directly linked to the information we use to book your appointment.

Appointment Confirmation Emails

  • Confirmation emails can sometimes end up in your Junk/Spam folders. Check to see if it is there. To avoid this for future appointments, add noreply@mailca.timetrade.com to your Safe Senders list.

    If this continues to happen, please contact palfeedback@cls.ab.ca for investigation.

  • Forward the confirmation to palfeedback@cls.ab.ca for investigation and let us know you received this email in error; then delete all copies immediately from your email, including your trash/deleted folder.

  • The attachment to your confirmation email allows you to import your appointment information into a calendar such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar etc. If you do not use a calendar service, you will not be able to open the attachment.

  • The ics file is set to the Mountain time zone. If your calendar settings are set to another time zone, your calendar will adjust the appointment time. To avoid appointment time confusion, Alberta Precision Laboratories recommends that you change your time zone to Mountain time or manually enter your appointment information into your calendar.

Cancelling Appointments

  • There are 2 methods of online cancellation:

    Logging into your registered account.

    • Log in to your registered account and click on cancel appointment in the blue menu bar
    • All future appointments will be listed, click view of the appointment you wish to cancel
    • The system will prompt your confirmation before the cancellation is complete

    Using your confirmation number and last name.

    • Click on cancel appointment in the blue menu bar
    • Enter your confirmation number and last name into the fields, click Continue
    • Confirm this is the appointment you wish to cancel, click Cancel Appointment
    • The system will prompt your confirmation before the cancellation is complete
  • If you do not have your confirmation number and do not have a registered account please call the Patient Appointment Line (403) 770-5136 to cancel your appointment.

Protecting your Identity

  • Sign in by clicking the sign in button in the blue menu bar above. Once signed in, click on your name displayed on the blue menu bar. You can then change your password and click Save.

  • Yes. You may use an alias (preferred name) for your first and last name when booking your appointment. If you book an appointment this way, remember that you will need to use the alias when informing the Patient Service Centre staff that you have an appointment.

Requisitions and Standing Orders

  • The Patient Service Centre Staff cannot collect your blood without a requisition. Contact your Healthcare Provider for instructions.

  • Yes, you need a requisition. Alberta Precision Laboratories cannot perform a collection without a requisition from a Healthcare Provider.

  • Confirm with your Healthcare Provider that the requisition was faxed to your chosen Patient Service Centre.

  • Requisitions do not expire, however if your Healthcare Provider has closed their practice or moved their office, it is recommended to obtain a new requisition.

  • Yes, you are able to have your tests conducted at Alberta Precision Laboratories with a requisition from your Healthcare Provider. The requisition must be in English and include the full mailing address, phone and fax numbers for your Healthcare Provider to receive results. Payment for testing can be paid via debit, MasterCard or Visa.

    Most of the time patients from out of province are not required to pay but you can check with your provincial healthcare to make sure they cover the tests that have been ordered.

Urine and Stool Collections

  • No, you can come to pickup a collection kit at any Patient Service Centre for the following tests:

    • Urinalysis (U)
    • Colorectal Cancer Screening (FIT)
    • Helicobacter pylori Stool Antigen Test (M HP)

    You will need to bring the requisition from your health care provider to be given a collection kit.

  • Different 24 hour urine tests require different collection kits. Call the Lab Information Centre at (403) 770-3600 to find out which Patient Service Centre location you can obtain your collection kit from.

Test Preparation

  • Always follow the fasting instructions given by your Healthcare Provider. If you are unsure please contact your Healthcare Provider for guidance.

    APL recommended fasting instructions can be found on our website.

  • Always follow the instructions you received from your Healthcare Provider. Click Here for fasting instructions.

  • Biotin supplements taken in doses >1000 ug (>1mg) may interfere with some lab tests.

    The amount of Biotin in your daily vitamin is unlikely to interfere. Biotin is also known as Vitamin H, Vitamin B7 or coenzyme R.

    APL recommends all patients discontinue Biotin supplementation for 48 hours prior to specimen collection. If your Healthcare Provider recommended you take Biotin contact them for further guidance.
